Pythagorium Theory.. well sort of...

The Mariners added a reliever who can throw 100 miles per hour to their bullpen on Monday in 24-year-old Thyago Vieira. They also added a pitcher with a rather interesting nickname.
“Big Sweat is in the house,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “That’s what he was nicknamed in spring training. He sweats a lot. So we nicknamed him Big Sweat.”

Vieira is one of the Mariners’ most interesting prospects, if for no other reason than he can throw a baseball really, really hard. At the Futures Game in July, Vieira threw 16 fastballs. Only one of them was clocked under 99 mph.

“He’s a great personality and I’m happy for him,” Servais said. “Quite a journey for where he’s come from.”

Before the 2016 season, the Mariners considered moving on from Vieira, who had been inconsistent throughout his early minor-league career. But he posted a 2.84 ERA in 2016 and has followed that up with solid numbers in 2017: a 3.59 ERA split between Class AA and AAA. In 11 1/3 innings in Tacoma this season, Vieira has a 3.18 ERA and 10 strikeouts and six walks.

He received the news on Sunday from Rainiers manager Pat Listach.

“When he told me, I didn’t believe it the first time,” Vieira said. “I said to the manager, ‘Wow, you’re kidding me. That’s not true.’ He said, ‘No, no, that’s true. You’re going to the big leagues tomorrow.’”

Added Vieira, who is from Brazil: “For me it’s a really big jump. Not just for me but for Brazilian baseball because everybody can see Brazil has another guy in the big leagues. That’s good for me and the other guys. I’m so happy because I’m trying to help the baseball in Brazil, too.”
Servais said Vieira’s inconsistencies have been with his command and ability to throw strikes. The Mariners will “break him in easy,” Servais said.
Vieira can pitch multiple innings but will be used primarily in non-pressure situations, or at least that’s the plan to start.
