Florial comes up lame

It turned out Estevan Florial had much more than a sore right wrist.
Florial has a fractured hamate bone in his right wrist that requires surgery.

Aaron Boone had the same injury in 2001 when he was playing for Cincinnati and missed a month.

Florial, the top position-player prospect in the Yankees' system, could end up missing more time than that — possibly being out until August. He has officially been placed on the 7-day minor-league disabled list.

The 20-year-old center fielder exited Thursday's game with Class A Tampa after going 0-for-2, snapping his streak of reaching base in 32 consecutive games.

"Frustrated a little bit, but it's a little bump in the road," Boone said. "Hopefully it's something that's not too long. I had surgery on the hook of my hamate too and I recall it not being that long of a thing.
"Hopefully it's just a little break in the action for him and he'll be back for most of the summer. That's hopefully the plan."

Florial had posted a .696 OPS in 36 games. "I hurt mine getting hit by a pitch," Boone said. "And his was different — most times hamate injuries happen from check swings or swings. So I don't know how that affects the timeline, but for me I feel like I played a game in four weeks."

Florial, who has star-potential tools, is believed to be a year or two away from the big leagues.
