The Blue Jays are going to get more protective in 2020.
Finally.
.
The
Jays announced on Tuesday that netting will be extended farther down the
baselines at Rogers Centre and at Dunedin Stadium, the team’s spring
training park, next year.
In statement released by the club on
Twitter, Andrew Miller, the Jays’ executive vice-president of business
operations, said it’s in the best interests of the fans to take this
step.
“Fan safety is paramount to the Blue Jays and we believe
that fans should feel protected and secure during our games,” Miller
said. “Extending the protective netting at Rogers Centre and Dunedin
Stadium is a clear next step for our organization and one that reflects
our team’s values. As fans and followers of the game, it is vitally
important for us to preserve and enhance the live baseball experience,
while also ensuring everyone who visits our ballparks can do so safely.”
The exact configuration of the netting in Toronto and Dunedin is to be determined.
Recent
incidents involving fans being hit, and injured, by foul balls has led
to growing conversation in the game that the kind of netting the Jays
will implement is required across major league baseball.
All 30 teams put extended netting in their stadiums to start the 2018 season.
The
Chicago White Sox announced earlier this season that the club would
extend netting to the foul poles at Guaranteed Rate Field, and that went
into effect late in July.
