 What a calamity !

Miguel Cabrera's season has come to an abrupt end.

The veteran slugger departed Tuesday night’s game against the Twins after injuring his left biceps muscle while swinging at an off-speed pitch from Jake Odorizzi in the bottom of the third inning. He was immediately sent for an MRI, which revealed a ruptured tendon. Cabrera will undergo surgery later this week and his rehabilitation from that procedure could extend well into the offseason -- possibly even into next spring.

Brian Murphy of the St. Paul Pioneer Press snapped a photo of Cabrera exiting the Tigers’ clubhouse late Tuesday with a big brace on his left arm. “Unbelievable,” he muttered to the media as he walked by.

Cabrera had been fairly productive this year when healthy, slashing .301/.397/.451 with three home runs, 11 doubles, and 22 RBI in 38 games. The power production wasn’t quite at the usual Miggy levels, but he did miss all but one game in May because of a left hamstring strain.

Niko Goodrum took over at first base to close out Tuesday’s loss to Minnesota, but John Hicks figures to be the primary guy there for Detroit moving forward. Hicks filled in at first base last month while Cabrera was on the shelf and batted .304/.345/.451 between May 2 and May 31. He is 7-for-21 so far in June. The 28-year-old might be able to provide some value in AL-only fantasy leagues, though he doesn’t offer enough upside in the counting stats departments to warrant adding in standard mixed formats. It’s possible the Tigers will seek outside help, but they’re currently six games under .500 and are far more likely to be sellers than buyers ahead of this year’s July 31 trade deadline -- especially with Cabrera now ruled out until 2019.

Cabrera, who turned 35 years old in April, is owed around $174 million on a contract that runs through the 2023 season. This injury is awful for the Tigers and awful for baseball fans in general.

It’s also awful for fantasy owners who found Cabrera a good buy in drafts this spring. His average draft position in Yahoo leagues was 66.8. In some leagues, you could get him in the 80s.

Lugo Staying in Mets’ Rotation

Mets right-hander Seth Lugo was excellent in Sunday night’s Subway Series finale against the Yankees, allowing just two hits and zero walks while striking out eight batters across six scoreless innings. That was only meant to be a spot start, but Mike Puma of the New York Post reported Tuesday evening that Lugo will remain in the Mets’ rotation and take his next turn this Saturday at Chase Field against the host Diamondbacks.

Lugo is currently owed in just 29 percent of Yahoo leagues, which is far too low for a guy who has registered a 1.77 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and 47/9 K/BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings this season. A large majority of that production has come in relief, but many of his appearances have been multi-inning outings.

The 28-year-old is averaging a career-high 93.8 mph with his fastball this season and he touched 97 mph with that pitch on Sunday. He’s also using his curveball more, to great success.

Noah Syndergaard is still on the disabled list with a strained ligament in his right index finger -- he was in New York on Tuesday for a second opinion -- so Lugo has an opportunity to run with this rotation spot for a while. If he continues to pitch well, it’s feasible that he could keep it the rest of the year.

Acuna Nearing Rehab Assignment

When young outfielder Ronald Acuna injured his left knee while crossing the first base bag on May 27, it looked like it might be a season-ender. But scans taken a day later showed only a mild ACL sprain and the ultra-talented 20-year-old told reporters on Tuesday that he is aiming to begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week -- possibly as early as Thursday.

That would mean he could be back on the Braves’ active roster by next Tuesday’s series opener in Toronto, just over three weeks after crumbling to the ground in pain at Boston’s Fenway Park.

Acuna had a .779 OPS, five home runs, and two stolen bases in his first 29 major league games.

Charlie Culberson has made the most of this opportunity to start regularly in left field -- he entered the day Tuesday slashing .356/.370/.556 in 46 plate appearances since Acuna got injured -- but the 29-year-old journeyman will probably now return to more of a utility role. Perhaps he could get playing time over Johan Camargo at third base, but that’s not really a relevant situation in standard mixed fantasy leagues.
