Yanks get Red Sox wannabees

As of Tuesday evening, the Red Sox were believed to be the frontrunner for White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier. But the 31-year-old slugger is instead headed to the rival Yankees, along with right-handed relievers David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle. Here is the full breakdown of the seven-player blockbuster …

YANKEES GET

WHITE SOX GET

Frazier can play third base and first base for New York, two areas of need. He was batting just .207/.328/.432 through 81 games this summer on the south side of Chicago, but the 31-year-old has slugged 91 home runs over the last two-and-a-half seasons and he makes for a nice power rental for the Yankees. Frazier is scheduled to become a free agent in the off-season.

Robertson began his major league career in Yankees pinstripes back in 2008 and 2017 was shaping up as his best season in a White Sox uniform, though this one stings for his fantasy owners as the 32-year-old will move into a setup role in his return to New York. Robertson is due around $18 million on a four-year, $46 million contract that runs through 2018.

Kahnle is truly the centerpiece here for the Yankees as a dominant setup man with club control that extends through the 2020 campaign. He owns 2.50 ERA and 60/7 K/BB ratio in 36 innings this year and has averaged 97.9 mph on his fastball -- the best average fastball velocity in the major leagues.

In return for those three players, Chicago got another top-100 prospect in Rutherford and a promising former first-round pick in Clarkin. Polo is a nice piece too for the suddenly-stacked White Sox farm system. Clippard essentially functions as a salary offset, with the Yankees taking on all the remaining money owed to Frazier and Robertson, though he figures to slide into a high-leverage with the Pale Hose -- perhaps even sharing ninth-inning duties with Anthony Swarzak.

The biggest fantasy fallout of this trade involves a player who was not included in the deal.

Yoan Moncada, the top overall prospect in the sport, will arrive at Guaranteed Rate Field on Wednesday to make his White Sox debut at third base -- the spot vacated by Frazier. Moncada, 22, was slashing .285/.381/.452 with 12 home runs and 17 stolen bases through 79 games this season with Triple-A Charlotte. He brings immediate relevance to standard mixed leagues.

Snakes Land Their Right-Handed Slugger

A few hours before the White Sox and Yankees got busy on their seven-player swap, the Tigers announced that they had traded outfielder J.D. Martinez to the Diamondbacks in exchange for minor league infielders Dawel Lugo, Sergio Alcantara, and Jose King.

Martinez was the most sought-after slugger on this year’s trade market, with his .305/.388/.630 batting line, 16 home runs, and 39 RBI through 57 games in 2017. He owns a sensational 147 OPS+ in 458 games since the beginning of the 2014 season and fits perfectly into the Diamondbacks’ lineup -- a lineup that needed a small injection of right-handed power and just received a very big one. Martinez should mash at Arizona’s Chase Field after spending the last three-and-a-half seasons calling Comerica Park home. Those stadiums are on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of park factors.

And it didn’t take the Diamondbacks all that much to get Martinez. Lugo, a 22-year-old third baseman and the headliner of the return package for Detroit, has slashed .282/.325/.428 with seven home runs and 43 RBI in 88 games this season at the Double-A level. Alcantara, a 21-year-old shortstop, is hitting .279/.344/.362 this summer in High-A ball. King is an 18-year-old middle infielder who has struggled in the rookie-level Arizona League.

Martinez will try to help his new club to the National League Wild Card Game before probably splitting as a free agent this winter. Arizona still has a mathematical shot at the National League West division title, but the Dodgers have won 10 straight games and 30 of their last 34.

Correa Out 6-8 Weeks With Thumb Tear

A first-round fantasy draft pick suffering a major injury would normally lead the Daily Dose here at Rotoworld, but we are heavy into trade season so Carlos Correa’s torn thumb ligament gets third billing.

Correa is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks after being diagnosed Tuesday afternoon with a torn ligament in his left thumb. He initially injured the thumb on a head-first slide into home plate back on July 4 and then fully tore the ligament Monday on a swing. Correa will undergo surgery, the same type of surgery that put Mike Trout on the shelf from May 28 until July 14.

Houston is hopeful its star shortstop will be ready to return around early-to-mid September.

Colin Moran was recalled from Triple-A Fresno when Correa officially hit the disabled list on Tuesday evening and the 24-year-old former top-100 prospect was batting .308/.373/.543 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI in 79 games this season in the Pacific Coast League. But the expectation from Astros beat writers is that Marwin Gonzalez will be the primary fill-in at short with Alex Bregman continuing to draw the majority of starts at third base.

Give a boost to Gonzalez in your ROS fantasy rankings. Moran can probably be ignored.
